Local Authority Corrects Their Mistake - Unlawful Council Tax Bill Charges Withdrawn by Sian Gissing-McMeel

Local Authority Corrects Their Mistaken

More good news for my charity.  I have helped a family hold their Local Authority (Council) accountable for unlawful charges on their Council Tax Bill.

My client contacted my charity for assistance as their local authority was charging excessive amounts unlawfully, placing our client in hardship, which could have led to 'Court Summons', risking their home, and eviction.

I reviewed the Council Tax Bill and the documents provided.

I had noted the Local Authorities mistakes as follows:

1. Had not applied the 'Single Persons Occupancy Rate' for two years.

2. Had applied unlawful 'Summons & Court Costs' charges when no case had been conducted.

I called the local authority by telephone, recorded the conversation, made them aware of their errors, and placed them on 'Notice' to correct them.

3 days later, I received an updated 'Council Tax Bill' via email.

I double-checked it again and noted that the 'Single Persons Occupancy Rate' had been back-dated and applied for 2024/2025, but the 'Summons & Court Costs' had not been removed. Therefore, I returned to the Local Authority again and highlighted that they had failed to remove the unlawful charges.

I respectfully commanded to see the original applications, letters, and files related to the 'Summons & Court Costs', stating that if they can not provide them, they must remove the charges.

On 28th May 2024, I received an email to confirm that the charges had been removed.

I am very happy that I could apply my knowledge and skills to help assist my client.

Justice:

  1.  Saved my client's money

  2.  Handled their matter so they had peace and safety

  3. Prevented any further unlawful charges

  4. Helped my client pro bono

Holding agencies accountable and demanding their mistakes to be corrected.

This is why I created my charity: to serve others and correct miscarriages of justice.
